Haute Route 2-Day Training Course

Spend two days in the ideal terrain of the Wasatch, honing the essential skills and techniques for navigating the fabled Haute Route, or any other glaciated ski tour.

Description:

The Haute Route is the classic alpine multi-day, hut-to-hut, ski mountaineering objective between Chamonix, France and Zermatt, Switzerland. It should be on the "bucket list" for every adventure skier! UMA guides know the Haute Route, Ortler Traverse, Bernese Oberland, etc. Your guide can prepare you for safe and successful travel in technical and glaciated terrain.

Skills and Training include:

  • Efficient use of climbing skins
  • Steep snow climbing in ski boots
  • Use of boot crampons, ice axe and ski crampons
  • Rappelling and lowering
  • Glacier route-finding and navigation
  • Roped-up glacier travel on skis
  • Building solid snow and rock anchors
  • Crevasse rescue for ski mountaineering
  • Ascending a rope to escape a crevasse
  • Stamina training for multi-day tours
  • Efficient techniques for passing through busy bottlenecks
  • Learn what to expect and how to enjoy staying in busy huts
  • Common training venues include Alta Periphery, Mt. Superior, White Pine and the Lone Peak Wilderness.

UMA reserves the right to cancel or shorten the clinic if fewer than 3 participants register.

Level

Ability to ski variable, un-groomed snow required. Ski touring experience recommended.
