Scheduled Course - Learn to Lead Ice Climbing Clinic

Learn to Lead Ice:

Build on skills learned in UMA ice classes or several years of experience climbing ice, on rock or elsewhere to become an experienced and independent partner, prepared to lead water-ice routes. Ground school will include the opportunity to place a variety of ice and mixed rock/ice protection and create bomber anchors for top-roping or multi-pitch. Broadly experienced and/or AMGA certified UMA ice guides will share their tips and tricks with new leaders.

Guests will do "mock leads." A top-rope will be used for security while learning.

  • Practice placing ice screws
  • Learn to select safe and optimal placement locations
  • Identify and use stances for placing screws efficiently
  • Create solid anchors with modern day techniques and optimal screw placements
  • Learn how to build ice threads (V, A and 0 threads) and best practices for rappel anchors
  • Gain knowledge of the importance of micro and macro route finding in the mountains and on ice climbs.

UMA reserves the right to cancel or shorten the clinic if fewer than 2 participants register. Maximum of 4.

Level

Intermediate to advanced. Ice climbing experience required. Rock experience recommended.
