Sport Leading - Rock Climbing Scheduled Course

Sport Leading

There's nothing like being on the "sharp end" (of a climbing rope.) Once you lead, you'll be hooked on climbing. This clinic is designed for climbers who have experience belaying and top roping, and now want to become competent leaders. We will use "mock leading" on a top rope to safely learn the intricacies of clipping bolts on lead.

  • Open the door to routes where anchors aren't otherwise accessible
  • Practice on well-bolted, moderate routes initially
  • Build confidence and progress to the next level
  • Scale quartzite, granite or limestone crags

Skills and techniques taught include:

  • Belaying a leader
  • Effective communication between leader and belayer
  • Clipping bolts quickly and avoiding back-clipping
  • Climbing efficiently on faces and through roofs
  • Taking full advantage of "rests" as you climb
  • Learning to "take" on the rope and "shake out"
  • Practicing leader-falls in a safe environment
  • Tethering in, hanging a top-rope and cleaning bolted anchors
  • Lowering, rappelling and using a friction hitch for backup
