Winter 2024/25 Course Dates now available for registration.

Scheduled Course - Crack Climbing Class

Trad Series: Crack Climbing

This clinic is designed for climbers looking to become comfortable climbing cracks. Most natural-protection routes follow crack systems where protection ("pro") can be placed, versus relying on pre-placed bolts. Arguably, crack climbing is the purest form of rock climbing. It has a rich history in the United States, from Yosemite to Indian Creek.

The Wasatch Range is filled with granite and quartzite cracks and is a perfect place to develop skills. This clinic will allow you to securely and efficiently climb a variety of crack types and grow your arsenal of techniques.

Skills and techniques taught include:

  • Improving security and efficiency scaling various cracks
  • Taping hands for crack climbing
  • Learning hand, finger and foot jams
  • Building stemming and lie-back technique
  • Placing and removing gear in cracks
  • Learning efficiency strategies for cracks, including use of "rests"
  • Building anchors in crack systems
  • Scaling off-widths and wide cracks
  • Learning route-finding in crack systems
