Learn backcountry touring skills, avalanche terrain recognition and risk mitigation in the company of other young skiers and splitboarders. This is a fun day of touring with a friendly, professional UMA guide. It's designed to build on skills learned in UMA's Youth Avalanche 1 or other previous experience. It can also be a participant's first time off-piste.
Guided tours naturally introduce young athletes to navigational skills; route finding; map reading; backcountry skiing and splitboarding techniques in variable snow conditions; uphill skinning practice; kickturns; reading terrain and understanding backcountry hazards.
Open to ages 13-17, participants may skin moderate or steeper terrain, based on aptitude and current conditions. There are plenty of terrain options that allow guides to accommodate a variety of skill levels and enjoy soft snow in easy to moderate or advanced terrain. Experienced groups may climb and ride incredible peaks and couloirs in the Wasatch Mountains, such as Wolverine Cirque, Toledo and Superior, depending on weather, snow conditions, etc.
Objectives
The program is offered in mid-winter when the Utah snowpack is typically deep and strong enough for various backcountry objectives.
